My Thoughts

I have been looking forward for Jared’s story for a very long time now and let met tell you PENELOPE. DOES. NOT. DISAPPOINT!

All of the questions I had surrounding Jared were answered in Until You.. I wondered things like

  • Why did Jared treat Tate so horribly?
  • What were Jared’s motives?
  • What was behind his tainted past – and why it affected his actions and demeanour

When I first saw the ARC sitting in my inbox. I almost fainted.. I kid you not. I was so HAPPPPPYY, I started reading it straight away and finished it within the day. My eyes were devoted to my computer screen and no-one could pull me away, I was honestly kind of like this:

What I LOVED about Until You was that it was written in Jared’s POV. I was finally able to get inside Jareds head and it made my mind go AJNIFBWFNG. I felt a ton of different emotions.

Before I delve into anything I would like to say that Until You isn’t a straight retelling of Bully, obviously it is based off Bully and told from Jareds POV but it also features some new scenes, a helluva lot of insight into Jared’s mind and gives you, the reader, a COMPLETELY new understanding of Jared’s personality and motivations. I know that I have said this so so so many times before but I LOVE books written in differing POV’s and this one is definitely one of my favourites. Penelope truly gets into the male state of mind and her writing style is just on par, with Jared being a character filled with  a mix of angst, semi-humour, aggression, passion, loss and last but not least love and devotion. For the love Jared had continually had for Tate never wavered from the time they had spent apart. He was completely devoted to hating her but his mind was consumed with love for her. Until You is a story of love and hate, with the bullying he shows towards her titling towards the hate side, but underneath the exterior of him.. it was a way to cover his unyielding love to her.

For those of you who haven’t read Bully, the Fall Away series is the story of Jared and Tate. The following spiel about Bully is taken from my this post about Until You:

First up we have Tatum Brandt, now Tate is the girl in school who everyone avoids, she is beautiful but for some reason no one wants to talk to her or befriend her. She has one best friend and that is pretty much it and her high school experience is hell, not because she doesn’t have any friends, its because of one person: Jared.

Jared and Tate were best friends for years, they lived right next door to each other and had such a strong friendship, until one day Jared all of a sudden wants nothing to do with her. He starts picking on her and treats her differently from everyone else. He is rude, conceited, good looking, arrogant yet popular and can get any girl he wants. So why is it that he goes out of his way to pick on Tate?

Tate has no idea what she could have possible done to make Jared treat her so terribly, but she lets him. She doesn’t stick up for herself, and he constantly tears her down, spreads rumours about her and continues to make her life a living hell. They are practically enemies, living next door to each other, so it really makes you wonder, how two enemies end up in a love story…. with one another? Well my friends, I am not going to say anymore.

Now in Until You, we hear Jared’s side of the story. Reading about why Jared bullied Tate made me a cross mix between angry and sad.. lets settle for calling it sangry. I was mad that it took them this long to get together, that they had wasted so much time because of a misconstrued situation. I was frustrated because they hit so many road blocks in their journey of love and in the end I was manic-borderline-depressive because….well Tate had Jared and I kinda wanted him… LOL.. Alas it will never be. Jared and Tate belong together so I’ll just harbour my love for Jared and appreciate him from afar… HAHAHAHAHA

Reading about K.C and Jared’s relationship made me want to strangle K.C, Slap Jared and then punch a brick wall.. (Not sure why or how Penelope evoked such angry emotions from me) but mainly I was just like

HOW COULD YOU BOTH DO THAT TO TATE!?! I hated how K.C betrayed Tate like that, I hated that Jared was using K.C and K.C was using Jared and I was 1000% against the two of them

… BUT most of all I hated the two of them together. HOWEVER after reading from Jared’s POV I learned that there is more than meets the eye, and their relationship is actually perceived quite differently from their relationship portrayed in Bully. Nonetheless, in Bully I want punch the bitch but in Until You, my anger decreased, I would settled for a gentle slap for her selfishness but I lowered my aggression enough to not wanna cause K.C bodily harm… Hahahaha. As you can tell, although K.C redeemed herself in Until You. I still couldn’t wrap my head around her character and I although I don’t hate her.. I don’t like her either #sorrynotsorry #imnotgonnalie #realtalk #lolz

Moving on from K.C (sorry Penelope, I still don’t like her), Until You reveals glimpses into Jared’s life before Tate, without Tate and with Tate. It shows how Jared dealt with Tate being away, it shows his relationship with his son-of-a-bitch-father as well as ALL OF THE FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS that crossed his mind when Tate was around. It’s a complete different side then Tate’s in Bully and I LOVEEEEEEEEED IT. SQUEEEEEEE. Jared isn’t just an angry character like he seems to be in Bully, he actually is quite caring and compassionate towards not only Tate, his brother but also towards his BFF Madoc. Although there was a lot of punching involved in their friendship, they actually have each others backs and trust each other with their lives.

Madoc is easily one of my favourite characters, he is hilarious and clever. I cannot wait to read his story in Rival.. 2014 come at ME. I am eager and waiting!

Overall, I am so happy that I got to read Until You. I am already a massive fan of your work Penelope! This is Penelope’s second novel and I am so excited to see where her writing takes her in the future, I see big things for her novels and I hope you give Bully and Until You a chance. You won’t be disappointed. If you’re after an almost unusual love story that doesn’t exactly follow the normal route to love, after extremely relatable characters and a sexy ass male lead (hey.. it had to be said. We all know Jared is one helluva sexy man-hunk ;)) then Until You is the book for you.

Sneaky Excerpt

How did she do that? How did she always manage to make me feel happy to see her happy?

I blinked long and hard.

Tate continued yapping to the dog. “Oh, well, I love you, too!” She sounded like she was speaking to a child, all sweet and shit, as Madman kept nudging and licking her face.

He shouldn’t love her this much. What had she done for him in the past two years?

“Madman, come,” I barked, not really angry with the dog.

Tate’s eyes shifted up to me, and she stood up. “You’re being a jerk to the dog now, too?” She scowled, and it was then that I noticed what she was wearing.

The Nine Inch Nails T-shirt I’d given her when we were fourteen, and my chest swelled for some stupid unknown reason.

I’d forgotten she had it.

Okay…not really. I guess I didn’t realize that she still had it.

She probably didn’t even remember that I’d given it to her.

Kneeling down to hook Madman’s leash onto his collar, I twisted my lips up slightly. “You’re talking again, Tatum.”

I didn’t call her Tate. She hated “Tatum”, so that’s what I called her.

I fixed a bored, superior expression on my face.

I’d be happier without her around, I told myself. She was nothing.

And yet, I heard the little voice in the back of my head. She was everything.

She shook her head, the hurt in her eyes clear as she turned to walk away.

She wasn’t fighting back, I guess. Not today. The party on Friday night—when I’d humiliated her, and she’d punched my friend, Madoc, in the face—must have been a one-time deal.

“Is that what you’re wearing on the plane?” I asked, sneering.

I should’ve just walked away, but hell, I couldn’t stop engaging her. It was an addiction.

She turned back to me, her fingers fisting up. “Why do you ask?”

“Just looks a little sloppy is all.” But that was a bold-faced lie.

The black T-shirt was worn out, but it clung to her fit body like it was made just for her, and her dark jeans hugged her ass, telling me exactly what she would look like naked. With long, shiny hair and flawless skin, she looked like fire and sugar, and I wanted to gorge and burn at the same time.

Tatum was hot, but she didn’t know it.

And blonde or not, that was my type.

“But no worries,” I continued. “I get it.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Get what?”

Leaning in, I taunted her with a smug grin. “You always liked wearing my clothes.”

Her eyes widened, and with her flushed skin there was no mistaking that she was pissed. It was raging all over her tough little face.

And I smiled to myself, because I fucking loved it.

She didn’t run away, though.

“Hold on.” She held up her pointer finger and turned to walk to the truck.

Digging under the front seat, in the emergency pack her dad kept there, she fished out something and slammed the car door shut. By the time she’d huffed back over to me, I saw that she had a lighter in her hand.

Before I could even register what was happening, she’d peeled off her shirt and exposed her perfect chest in a sexy ass sports bra.

My heart damn near shifted with the fucking pounding in my chest.

Holy shit.

I watched, not breathing, as she held up the shirt, flicked the lighter, and dipped the hem into the flame, bringing it to ash piece by piece.

Son of a bitch! What the hell was happening with her all of a sudden?

My gaze flashed to hers, and time stood still as we watched each other, forgetting the flaming material between us. Her hair danced around her body, and her storm-filled eyes pierced my skin, my brain, and my ability to move or speak.

Her arms shook a little, and her breaths, although steady, were deep. She was nervous as hell.
